Axonometric Projection

The task was to project a public sauna next to the Port of Tallinn. Nowadays saunas do not carry the
same values as 100 years ago. People are not depending on it, most of Estonians have bathing
available at their homes. Neither do they need saunas for birthing or for any other medical procedures.
The reason why people still want to use saunas is for the bodily enjoyment and traditions it offers.
In 2030 the Port of Tallinn will have a new appearance by Zaha Hadid Architects. More and
more people will start coming to the port and live in the new residentials planned there. Although
everything will be modern, there will be still people who want to keep on to their traditions and go to the sauna.

The public sauna would host visitors of the port but foremost the residents of the new area. The bathing has
to be peaceful and calming for the people who visit the sauna frequently but also for the people who want to
have relaxing time between travels, this is the reason why children will be not allowed there. Sauna’s location
would be by the admirality basin of the port where smaller boats and yachts can stay, basin is surrounded
by promenade and a bridge that crosses the waterway to the sea. This sauna would be in the middle of the
new and probably a bit sterile environment but would have the aura of Estonian bathing habits. Design mocks
ZHA’s masterplan’s round corners.

Ground Plan  &  Basement Plan

Sauna is a big loop which is separated symmetrically into three sectors.
Two of them are changing and shower rooms. In the middle of these two is reception which has two utility rooms right beside it.  Third sector is for two saunas. In the middle of these three sectors is a courtyard closed by class walls.  Visitors have opportunity to go and cool themselves off after sauna in the cold sea or jump into the pool which has a skylight.

In the basement is located techincal room. Sauna is heated with pellets. They are stored in a 13 m3 silo which is  filled with a pipe on the ground. Bigger silo is connected with a day-silo which feeds two burners. One burner
heats mass stove, the other has a water tank in the bottom connected to the buildings' water
system. Steam is heated and travels up to the sauna through the pipes. Two chimneys are connected in the middle.

Exterior Montage

Sauna will consider the overall pattern of the area but would not be unitary of the new solid buildings. This sauna will be distinguishable in the new expensive environment: people should recognize it’s substance. The facade is covered with yakisugi charred cladding which reminds me of smoke saunas but at the same time cleanliness. These two went hand in hand only just 50 years ago.
